ADVANCING THE COMMON GOOD

The Arc of Haywood County

The mission of the Arc of Haywood County is to promote independence, education and the overall well-being of children and adults with developmental disabilities. The Arc provides adaptive equipment, educational aids, recreational activity assistance, clothing, transportation and other aides to daily living tasks as requested. For people living in the community with DD, Arc uses recreational therapy to increase the participation in recreational and leisure activities.

The Arc works with a number of individuals with intellectual disabilities that live in their own apartments in the community. One young man began having behavioral challenges at work and required intervention by a therapist. The recommendation was that he would have therapy for his anger and interpersonal issues twice a month. Although he works, he does not have much money left after paying his bills. He could afford to cover the cost of therapy one time during the month but could not afford the second session. The Arc has used some of the United Way funds to cover this second session each month. With this counseling, he has been able to maintain his employment and continue to live successfully in the community.
