BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS
Big Brothers Big Sisters serve children, ages 6-18, primarily from single parent households, who live at or below poverty line, have been affected by criminal activity, substance or other abuse, and/or have other risk factors. Our purpose is to provide disadvantaged children with consistent, long-term one-on-one mentoring relationships. Adult mentors help children believe in themselves and know that they can make a positive change in their own lives.
School-based matches are limited to the Big Brother or Big Sister mentoring the child's at his/her school once a week for an hour. The “Bigs” work with the “Littles” on academic needs for part of the time and play board games, walk school trails, or play on the school playground for the rest of the hour.
A“Little” (in a school-based match) was asked what he had learned from his Big Brother. The “Little” who was 9 years old replied, “When I was young and first started this program (age 7), I didn’t want to get help from my Big Brother. But now that I am older, I have learned it is OK to ask for help when I need it. My Big Brother is there when I need him.”
